Padel Rules FAQ: Your Most Asked Questions Answered

Whether you’re new to padel or brushing up on the basics, these frequently asked questions will help you play confidently and correctly. Let's dive into the rules, quirks, and etiquette of the world's fastest-growing sport.

Is padel scoring the same as tennis?

Yes. The scoring in padel follows traditional tennis: 15, 30, 40, game. If the score reaches deuce (40–40), a golden point is played — meaning whoever wins the next point wins the game. No advantage scoring.

Can you volley in padel?

Yes — volleys are allowed and encouraged once the point begins. However, on the return of serve, the ball must bounce before being played.

Can the ball hit the wall in padel?

Absolutely. After the ball bounces on the court, it can hit the glass walls or fence and still be in play. If the ball hits the wall before bouncing or hits the mesh directly, it’s a fault or out.

How do you serve in padel?

Padel serves are underhand. You must drop the ball, let it bounce behind the service line, and hit it below waist height diagonally into your opponent’s service box. You get two attempts.

Can you play singles in padel?

While padel is primarily a doubles game, singles courts do exist. They’re narrower (6m wide vs. 10m for doubles) and harder to find. 95% of recreational padel is doubles.

When do you switch sides in padel?

Teams switch sides after every odd-numbered game: 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc. This keeps conditions fair and is standard in competitive and social play.

What happens if the ball hits the net on serve?

If the serve hits the net but lands correctly in the service box, it’s a let — replay the serve. If it lands outside or hits the fence, it’s a fault.

What's the golden point in padel?

The golden point is played at deuce (40–40). The receiving team chooses who returns. Whoever wins that one point wins the game — no advantage needed.
